There’s been a lot of movement here the last weeks and everybody at our development team’s been so excited about the new features that we launch today. After many weeks of hard work, struggle and testing, a new PlisWeb release sees the light. We consider this new release a major one since the main software’s got an extreme power boost. All the big changes have been made under the hood and you may not notice many differences at first sight, since the main feature resides on the ability to use transparent PNG or GIF files. That was something our users where missing, and they told us to fix it, so we did. Our main goal and the final purpose for the PlisWeb team is to build the easiest and most powerful site builder on earth, so users can create amazing sites without effort or requiring technical skills. So what to expect on today’s release? Here’s a list with the major improvements:

PNG, GIF, and transparency support

As told before, you are now able to load any type of picture on your site, and use transparency effects anywhere. So you’ve got a transparent logo? No problem. Do you need to place icons over some other pictures? Do it! Your site will respect the transparent pixels and you’ll be able to create amazing combinations anywhere on the site. And even better: Do not worry about the size of your pictures ’cause our software will take care of compressing everything with minimal quality loss, so your site gets the best performance possible. Here’s an example of a transparent logo that perfectly integrates on any site:

Speed , performance and security improvements.

Not only transparent pixels are now available everywhere. You can be more confident with the performance and reliability of the site builder, since we’ve corrected tens of bugs and made many more performance improvements. The software runs smooth, needs less memory and works flawlessly. Check it out!

New cool templates

We know that speed and performance are not the only things that our users care about. They want exclusive designs, and they want design power. So with this new release, you’ll be able to choose from 6 brand new cool templates in many different colors. An example here:

Improved image compression efficiency

And last but not least, we’ve improved our image compression and size management algorithms, so even the latest byte is saved and minimized. The builder uses a very smart process while optimizing every picture so it is stored with the smallest possible size while trying to preserve the maximum quality. So sites will load even faster now!

So we encourage you to try it now, and see how easy is to build an amazing web site with PlisWeb!

Web apps are sites that behave similar to a desktop application so the browser needs to thread it in a different way than a normal page. To promote this new browser feature, the guys at Google created a new site that is called “Chrome web store”. In this site you’ll be able to browse thousands of items and find some cool and innovative applications that implement the latest Internet technologies.

Check the store here:

As we believe that PlisWeb is part of the new wave of Internet rich applications, we have added our main web site builder to the store so you’ll be able to install it on the chrome browser today.

Today we’re extremely excited to announce one of the most powerful Plisweb releases ever.

The whole plisweb environment’s been updated, and as the title on this post says, at first sight you’ll notice only minor changes. The visual interface’s been modified, the graphic elements are more polite, but everything seems to be working the same way. Well, not really!! As always, the power lies under the hood…

Starting from today, you will be able to create incredibly complex menus as the editor will allow you to create endless subsections. Do you want to create a section with 25 subsections? No problem, you can. Do you want to create 50 sub-subsections for each one of the 25 subsections? No problem! Just chek it out on our main web site editor, and you’ll see how easy it is done.

This new feature is part of our effort to create the most powerful and easiest web site creation software in the world. But there’s more with this release than just the submenus feature: As said before on this blog, we ‘ve added friendly url encoding for all the sites, we’ve migrated all the PlisWeb code to the powerful and lighter FLEX 4 SDK, we’ve improved performance, memory consumption, corrected lots of bugs, … and the list goes on. We love the results and we are extremely proud of our team.

But that is just the beginning. Keep an eye on this blog, ’cause we are now focusing all of our efforts in another important area: Adding tons of templates, so you will be able to create more and more beautiful sites in a breeze!!

You can test everything by yourself here

There’s nothing easier on earth.

Starting from now, all the plisweb sites have been modified to work with friendly URLS. And by saying all the plisweb sites, we mean those that have been created, and those that will be. Nobody will escape the pretty url format. But let’s see what’s exactly a friendly url, and why have we struggled with implementing it on the plisweb environment.

Friendly urls are also called “pretty urls”, and consist on a web site developing technique that encodes the page urls so users cannot see the original ones. For example, let’s imagine that we have a web site that works with the following URL:

http://www.mysite.com/products.php?product_id=1890

As we may be using some database system, we need to pass parameters to our php page so it can render the desired information. Let’s also imagine that this information is related to some cool product that is stored on our DB system. The website works as expected and does everything we expect it to do. But we have some “small” problems:

1. Everybody will be able to guess the parameters that our site is using.

This is not normally an annoyance, but sometimes may lead to security problems, especially when we are dealing with sensitive data.

2. Some search engines may ignore urls with dynamic parameters.

We know that Google will read the dynamic urls, but we also know that some other engines skip them to avoid unwanted data. So by using parameters in a url, we’re maybe losing potential visitors.

3. The url may contain lots of parameters

In some cases we may need to send tons of GET values to our script, and we may end with a really ugly, unreadable and endless array of strange characters. This is not a problem for computers, but causes problems with humans. We like it polite…

The solution

So how can we solve these problems while keeping the dynamic nature of our site? The answer is “friendly URLS”. By implementing this technique, we will be taking our site to a higher level. Let’s take a look at how would the previous url example look in a friendly URL format:

http://www.mysite.com/products/1890/usb-driven-rocket-launcher

As we can see, the url is more readable by people and still contains the info we need to generate our db queries (that is, the product id value). We solved the security problems as nobody can guess the real dynamic url, and we are also adding keyword information right in the url, so SEO will be better.

If you want to use a friendly encoding, you must understand your web server rewriting protocol. With Apache you normally write a “.htacess” file or directly modify the apache setup depending on your needs. The conversion is done at web server level and is absolutely transparent to the users. You then need to take some things into account, as using this technique involves writing all the website in a different way. We will not be covering the technical details for friendly urls on this article, but here you have some links that will be extremely useful to learn the required technical abilities:

http://httpd.apache.org/docs/1.3/mod/mod_rewrite.html

http://net.tutsplus.com/tutorials/other/using-htaccess-files-for-pretty-urls/

As you can see, friendly URLS are cool and useful, and all the plisweb sites that you create with our software will be using it on everything from page sections to pictures.

Happy pliswebbin’ !

One of the main efforts and occupation for our team during the last months was motivated by the requirement of migrating the Plis Web main application to the new Flex 4 SDK. It’s been a hard and difficult task as the starting point was a standard FLEX 3 application, and everyone knows that FLEX 4 included lots of changes and different approaches for almost every language aspect. It’s been hard but we’ve completed now the 90% of the process and we’re extremely happy with the results. We believe that we will be releasing the full new version during the next week or weeks.

It’s been a hard challenge for the team to adapt the full application to the new way FLEX 4 works and the spark architecture, but it’s been the right choice. One could think that the process of “upgrading” a classic FLEX 3 Application to FLEX 4 requires to simply modify all the component tags, but the real scenario causes lots of headaches. In some cases the new spark alternatives work completely different than the mx ones, and this forces the engineer to rebuild big parts of the project from scratch. The changes Adobe introduced on Flex 4 give great freedom for the developers and designers to create Flex applications with an impressive look and an extraordinary visual flexibility, by separating the visual from the functional logic on all the language components. This leads to smaller file sizes and a better overall performance.

But what are the real world benefits that end users will appreciate after this upgrade? Let’s see:

Improved performance; CPU consumption is lower.

Better visual appearance and fluency.

Lower system memory consumption.

Better text rendering and anti aliasing.

Smaller size for the application files that leads to a faster loading and response times.

So we can conclude that we are very excited with this upcoming major release, and hope that you will have more fun and will be able to do great new web sites with this amazing tool.

It’s been a few months since the first PlisWeb release but our team has been working hard to add some new interesting features to the web editor. So today we are here to explain one of the coolest features included in the upcoming update, the possibility to create a mulit-level menu.

If you tried the current version of our web editor you’ve noticed that one of the limitations is that you can only create a simple one level menu, thing that not lets you to create complex web structures. In the upcoming update we’ve added an easily way to create the menu structure that you want, creating a multi-level tree without depth restrictions. As I said, this feature works as a tree, so each node is a section in the generated HTML.

Let’s see how it looks:

As you can see is a friendly way to create a complex menu structure. The result in the HTML website looks like this:

Stay tuned, we have more new features to show !!!
